May 2012

If things were any busier at the FriendShop I'd have to write a book instead of a blog.

April was crazy busy starting with our first Wonderful Wednesday on April 4th.  We had a lovely visit from Joyce Basarich and her little readers from the library along with their parents.  Several book dealers came to scoop up our great deals - we LOVE book dealers!  We get new inventory in on a daily basis and the Boerne community is very supportive.   Our next Wonderful Wednesday is May 2 from 9:00 am until noon.  This month another youth group will be stopping in late morning and several Library Foundation members will be visiting our new store. If you haven't seen the Friendshop in awhile, I think you'll be quite surprised and pleased with the changes. Come on in for a cup of coffee, buy some books or pick up a cute Mother's day gift.

On April 11th Dan Basarich and Dani Volmer loaded all the metal shelves that were leftover from the Adios Annex sale and brought them to a recycle facility and made $115.00 for the Friends!  Thanks Dan and Dani!

On April 18th the Friends celebrated Volunteer Month with a Luncheon at Fritze's.  The Friends received 15% from the total library purchases.  Our Volunteer of the year was Juanita Jonas!

Dan and Joyce Basarich enjoying their barbecue lunch.

Dani Volmer and Jackie Lewis catching up on the latest news.

Barbara Carpenter, Carol Iverson and Juanita Jonas

Alan and Bernel Norton - our newest members and volunteers.

Bob Hill enjoying his lunch.

The 150th anniversary of Kendall County was celebrated on April 28. The Friends were there to help sell books at several tables.

Thanks Dan Basarich and Ann Liebner for your help!

We have a new Treasurer!  Helen Jackson has graciously volunteered to be our treasurer for the 2012 term.  We are thrilled to have Helen join our team!

Our next meeting is Friday, May 4th at 2:00 at the FriendShop.

Remember: Starting May 4 the FriendShop will be open every Friday(except the Friday before mini sales) and Saturday from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. We would love to have your help in our bookstore!  Volunteers are needed for 2 or 4 hour shifts to shelve books, process sales, assist with special projects, and organize displays.

Donations are always welcome! The Friends are extremely grateful for these generous donations. We accept hard and soft cover books, Cds, DVDs, sheet music and puzzles. All donations should be brought to the library and if you have a large donation please call the library at 830-249-3053 before you come.

View From Opening Day

We hit a home run! Yes, today was opening day for professional baseball, but it was also Wonderful Wednesday at the FriendShop Book Store!

About 50 people stopped in to look around including several book dealers, 'regulars' to all our sales,  Peggy Bowie, Secretary of the Library Foundation, Jay Ermis from the Boerne Star, and Kelly Skovbjerg, PHPL Director.  We received lots of good feedback and several comments such as:

"It's so open!"
"It's beautiful outside!"
"Can you come to my house and decorate?"
"This is totally amazing...can you be open everyday?"

Here's some pictures from the day.  Enjoy.

Somebody liked the teddy bear as much as the books!

Dani Vollmer: volunteer and past President.

Ann Liebner and a small shopper.

Here. You take this one.

Eny Gatewood reading her favorite subject. ;)

May 2nd is our next Wonderful Wednesday.  Also, starting May 4 and 5, we'll be open every Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.  We appreciate everyone that stopped in and if you missed today, we hope to see you soon!

April 2012

Dear Friends:

This is a particularly exciting time to be a Friend.  We have been very active this Spring with several projects.

Thanks to the hard working Friends that made the 30th annual book sale a huge success.  The sale raised approximately $25,000 - an amount that will provide many needed extras to the Boerne Public library.   We raffled several items during the sale and below are the winners:

Walmart gift certificate - Larry Gormley
Plaza Liquors gift certificate - Margo Jewell
Dinner for two at Welfare Cafe - Peggy Dean
Lunch for two at Peach Cafe - Rachel Lee
Kuhl yogurt gift certificate - Tricia Sherman
Scuzzi's gift certificate - Ann Adams
Enchilada plates at El Rio - Sharon Mazurik
Quiznos - Justin Hayden
Paradise Tan - Sarah Alvaraole

Congratulations to all our winners and thanks for supporting the FOBPL!

On Saturday March 17th, the Friends participated in Outdoor Family Fair in downtown Main Plaza.

It was a book fishing frenzy!

Children 'fished' for books and by the end of the day we had handed out over 200 books!

Even the littlest ones like to pick out books!

We also handed out bookmarks that listed our upcoming mini book sales and our Wonderful Wednesday openings - first Wednesday of every month from 9:00 am till noon. It was a lot of fun and an event we plan on doing next year.

Opening Soon!
True to its name, the FriendShop will soon be opening as a used book store.

Our goal is to create a used book store that provides great reading for Boerne while raising funds to continue our support of the PHPL.

Plans are to be open the 1st Wednesday of every month (starting April 4th; 9:00 am till noon) and Fridays and Saturdays starting in May 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM.

Stop by, grab a book, have cup of coffee and sit a spell!

Meeting Time Change

"The world is run by those who show up."
                   - David K. Langford

Our upcoming meeting will be on Friday, April 6th at 10:30  in the FriendShop. Starting in May our meeting will continue to be on the first Friday of  the month, but the time will change to 2:00 PM.

Volunteer Lunch!

On Wednesday April 18th at 11:30 the Friends will be having a luncheon/fundraiser at Fritze's BBQ restaurant on Main street. 15% of the food bill will be donated to the Friends to help support PHPL functions. Fritze's strongly believes in supporting the community in which they live and work. Friends will be serving cake and crowning our Volunteer of the Year. If you can't make lunch, stop by anytime, pick up some dinner or meals for your next party and mention FOBPL. Watch for your Evite coming in the next couple of weeks.

Did you see it?

On Monday March 26th, a windmill went up next to the FriendShop!

It's up and it looks great.

Questions??  Do I get questions!!

What kind of items can I donate to the Friends?
We accept donations of hard and soft-cover books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, records and puzzles.

How do I donate books?
Easy. Bring them to the library. We have a closet where all donated books, CD's, records, magazines and videos are stored until we sort them. If you have large donation, please call ahead to the library (830) 249-3053 so they know you're coming.

What happens to my books after I donate them?
  • Books donated to the Friends are carefully reviewed to determine if they will be added to the library shelves. From June 2011 until March 2012, approximately 1,270 books worth an estimated $26,000 have been donated to the library.
  • Books are recycled in 2 bins at the Annex and 1 bin at the library. We make approximately $100/month on recycling.
  • Books are sold at the FriendShop during the 4 mini sales and on days the FriendShop is open.  Book sale revenues are donated back to the Library to fund Library requests. In March the Friends supported the Library by purchasing the rights to the building photographs from Mark Menjivar Photography ($1,500).  These images will be used in marketing pieces, on the library's website, and social media venues.
  • Vintage books are sold on eBay.
  • Many books are turned into repurposed art such as this:

  • Finally, some books that don't fit in any category, are provided free to the community on our "free" shelf at the FriendShop.

What hours is the FriendShop going to be open?
We'll be open the first Wednesday of every month starting in April from 9:00 am till noon. In May we'll be open  every Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

I have some furniture I'd like to donate but I'm not sure if you can use it.
Currently we are looking for a large wooden table and chairs to use for our meetings and Book Club groups.  Email carpenter@gvtc.com for further information.  Also, if anyone has recently discontinued their land line, and you're not using your phone anymore, we'd love to have it!  Please drop it off at the library and tell them it's for the Friends!

Any other questions?  Please email me at clp1958@gvtc or post a question in the comment section.

Other News Briefs:
  • Dues are payable now for 2012.  If you have not paid your 2012 dues, you may pay them by leaving it at the Library or mailing it to the Friends of Boerne Public Library, 451 N. Main Street, Boerne, TX 78006.  We recently mailed out letters to all members who were deliquent with their dues.  If you feel you recieved this letter in error, please email me at the above address.
